Kostas wrote the song and Loveless recorded it for Honky Tonk Angel. It was released in May 1989 as the album's third single and gave her the first number one of her career, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart in the week of 12 August 1989 after 18 weeks on the chart. Vince Gill sang backing vocals. Tony Brown discovered the song while searching for material for the album, and Kostas, who was not at that time considering a career in country, went on to write more songs for her and for other country artists.
The song is heard in the seafood restaurant scene in the film A Few Good Men. On the fourth season of The Voice, the winner Danielle Bradbery sang it in a duet with her coach Blake Shelton.
