Harlan Howard and Kostas wrote the song, and Epic released it in April 1993 as the lead single from Only What I Feel. It reached number one in the week of 19 June 1993 and spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart. It was her third number one. The lyric tells an ex-boyfriend to blame his lying, cheating, two-timing heart for whatever treatment he gets from the next woman. Sherman Halsey directed the video, in which David Keith played the ex-boyfriend.
According to Rolling Stone, which ranked it number 147 on its 200 Greatest Country Songs list in 2024, Loveless's team kept rejecting the song until Deborah Allen was set to sing it in the film The Thing Called Love. Allen's version was featured in the 1993 film.
