Simon wrote it for Kathy Chitty, his girlfriend during his time in England, and it is one of his most personal songs, though her name appears only in the title. Jim Beviglia of American Songwriter places it in a stretch when Simon was in America and she was in England. He recorded it alone with his guitar for The Paul Simon Songbook in June 1965, and Simon & Garfunkel recorded it again on 21 December 1965 for Sounds of Silence. Ultimate Classic Rock ranked it tenth among the duo's songs and called it Simon's prettiest.
It was never a single. The earliest performance on setlist.fm is on the Five to Ten show in London on 21 January 1965. Simon has seldom sung it on his own since, but Art Garfunkel made it a staple of his solo shows. Eva Cassidy recorded it in January 1996. The upload in the hypersongs web is the solo 1965 London recording, not the Simon & Garfunkel version.
