India Navigation was run by Bob Cummins, a corporate lawyer who had photographed Sanders at Slugs in 1969, from a converted spring-water factory in Rockland County. Cummins first wanted a saxophone and bass duo; that session became side two. Sanders came back for side one, frustrated with the studio, walked out, and returned a month later to finish. The players were never all in the room together. Sanders disliked the result and refused to let it be reissued for years.

Its reputation grew anyway, and in 2023, after he had signed off on it before his death, Luaka Bop issued a box set restored from two original pressings, since the master tapes are lost, with two 1977 live versions of Harvest Time. Pitchfork called it Best New Reissue and said it captures a feeling of unearthly magic.
