Thembi is dedicated to Sanders's South African wife, Nomathemba. Side one was recorded in Los Angeles with Michael White on violin, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano and Fender Rhodes, Cecil McBee on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums; side two in New York with Roy Haynes and four African percussionists, Sanders adding flute, koto, balafon, cowhorn and fife. It moved away from the long side-length pieces toward shorter tracks, and was Smith's last record with him. It reached five on Billboard's jazz chart.
