Public Enemy made the soundtrack to Spike Lee's 1998 film He Got Game after a four-year break, with Professor Griff and the Bomb Squad back in the group. Producers included members of the Bomb Squad with Abnes Dubose, Danny Saber, D. R. Period and Jack Dangers. The title track interpolates Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth, and Stephen Stills appears on it. It was the album's only single, in May 1998.

The album debuted at 26 on the Billboard 200 with 46,282 copies in its first week. In Britain it reached 50, and the title track reached 16 on the singles chart. Rolling Stone's Scott Poulson-Bryant found it dense and eclectic, brilliant at moments but sometimes confusing, and Christgau ranked it eighth on his Pazz & Jop list for the year.
