Released on Virgin on 29 June 1979 with No Birds Do Sing on the 7-inch, it reached number 20 in the UK. The 12-inch carried a Half Mix and the Megga Mix, an instrumental version of Fodderstompf. David Humphrey played drums. Levene said that he realised the tune he was bastardising by mistake was Swan Lake, so he played it on purpose, from memory and not quite right. For Metal Box it was remixed and retitled Swan Lake, with slight changes at the end. Levene said the Metal Box mix is version two, very different from the simpler original 12-inch version.

NME ranked it 11th among the tracks of 1979. Reynolds wrote in Pitchfork that on the original vinyl the song locks into an endless loop on the phrase words cannot express, and called the retitled mix a twentieth-century expressionist masterpiece. A live version appears on Live in Tokyo (1983).
