Released on Virgin on 5 September 1983, it reached number five in the UK and number three in Ireland, the band's biggest commercial hit. Public Image Ltd and Bob Miller produced it. The 7-inch edit runs 3:30 and the 12-inch 4:27, and the 12-inch remix appears on Commercial Zone as Love Song. The version on This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get is a re-recording at 4:12 with a horn section.

Lydon said people were saying he had joined big business, and that the record company kept asking for hits. Someone suggested he write a love song, so he wrote one that said it was not. The title echoes a line in the Flying Lizards' 1979 song Her Story about bands selling out their principles. The song is heard in the film Waltz with Bashir (2008).
