Ed Buller produced the album at Britannia Row in London between October 1993 and February 1994, apart from Lipgloss and She's a Lady, recorded in July 1993, and Babies, recorded in July 1992 at Island's Fallout Shelter. It reached number nine on the UK Albums Chart, was later certified gold, and was nominated for the 1994 Mercury Prize. BBC Music noted that it lost to M People's Elegant Slumming. Singles were Lipgloss on 15 November 1993, Do You Remember the First Time? on 21 March 1994 and The Sisters EP on 23 May 1994.
Its subjects are sexual encounters, social class and voyeurism. She's a Lady draws on Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive, and the closer, David's Last Summer, is among Pulp's most narrative songs, spoken almost throughout. The CD includes a remix of Babies, which the vinyl omits. Q readers voted the album the 70th greatest of all time in 1998. A deluxe edition with a bonus disc came out on 11 September 2006.
