Can You Hear Me? opens Novella and runs 13 minutes 39 seconds. It comes from the album on which Jon Camp wrote lyrics for the band for the first time, working with Dunford on the music. Sullivan ran a gong through a flanger to get its percussive effect.
The band played it on the BBC's Sight and Sound in Concert in January 1977. Deep Puddle Dynamics sampled it in We Ain't Fessin' (Double Quotes), and Blockheads sampled it in Sunday Seance on the album Music by Cavelight. The 2024 set Can You Hear Me? Broadcasts 1974-1978 takes its title from the song.
