Ashes Are Burning is the final track on the 1973 album of the same name, and it features an electric guitar solo by Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash, another band managed by Miles Copeland, at a time when the group was trying to move toward a more acoustic sound. It became the band's anthem piece and was often extended in concert to over twenty minutes, with a long bass solo and other instrumental workouts. The version on Live at Carnegie Hall lasts 23 minutes 50 seconds and fills side D.

American progressive radio stations such as WNEW-FM and KSHE 95 played the album often. Jon Camp named it as his favourite Renaissance song, and Haslam and Sullivan chose it as their tribute when he died in December 2024. Faith & Disease covered the song on the albums Fortune His Sleep (1995) and Livesongs: Third Body (1996).
