Stewart made his second solo album at Morgan Studios in London between February and April 1970, producing with Lou Reizner. Reizner ran Mercury's European operations, had signed Stewart in October 1968 and produced his first two solo records. The songs are a mixture of Stewart's own and other people's. The title song is credited to Stewart and Ronnie Wood, Lady Day and Jo's Lament to Stewart alone, and the covers include Bobby Womack's It's All Over Now, Bob Dylan's Only a Hobo, Country Comfort by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, and My Way of Giving by Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott.
Much of the playing came from his Faces colleagues. Wood plays guitar, acoustic guitar and bass, Lane takes bass on two songs, Kenney Jones drums on two, and Ian McLagan piano and Hammond organ. The UK credit list carries the note "Mac not available due to bus strike", while the US release credits McLagan. Stanley Matthews plays mandolin and Dick Powell violin.
Langdon Winner of Rolling Stone wrote in September 1970 that Stewart has "a rare sensitivity for the delicate moments in a person's existence", singled out Country Comfort for its nostalgia for rural life, and called the album the second volume in the collected works "of a supremely fine artist." Robert Christgau gave it an A- and wrote that Stewart "writes songs with almost as much imagination as he picks them." Reviewing the next album in Rolling Stone, John Mendelsohn described it and its predecessor as "equal parts magnificent splendor and scarcely listenable heavy-handedness." The album reached 27 on the Billboard 200 and 62 in the UK. Elkie Brooks had a hit with the title song in 1983, reaching 52 on the UK singles chart, and Long John Baldry covered it on his 1973 album Good To Be Alive.
