Stewart recorded his fourth solo album at Morgan and Olympic studios in London between March and May 1972 and again produced it himself. As on earlier records, members of Faces supplied much of the playing, and Lindisfarne's Ray Jackson returned on mandolin, with Spike Heatley on upright bass, Gordon Huntley on steel guitar and Dick Powell on violin. Three songs are credited to Stewart and Ronnie Wood, and You Wear It Well to Stewart and Martin Quittenton. The covers are Bob Dylan's Mama, You Been on My Mind, Jimi Hendrix's Angel, I'd Rather Go Blind, and Sam Cooke's Twistin' the Night Away, with an arrangement by Jimmy Horowitz. Stewart's version of the Dylan song is one of those featured in Nick Hornby's book 31 Songs.
It reached two in the United States and the Netherlands, three in Australia and one in Canada, and was a UK number one for two weeks. Singles were You Wear It Well in August 1972, Angel with What Made Milwaukee Famous in November 1972, and Twistin' the Night Away in May 1973 in Europe. Christgau gave it an A- and wrote that it "doesn't peak as high as Every Picture", though You Wear It Well starts ringing in the head like Maggie May after a couple of plays.
