The first single from Raising Hell, written by Run and DMC and produced by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons. DMC told MTV News it was about their sneakers but bigger than that, an answer to people who judged b-boys and b-girls by their appearance. Run explained that unlaced shoes came from jail, where laces were not allowed, and DMC's lyric says the shoes bring good news and are not felon shoes.
At Madison Square Garden on 19 July 1986 the band had the crowd hold up their Adidas. Co-manager Lyor Cohen had invited the Adidas executive Angelo Anastasio to the show, and the endorsement deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company. In the video the group addressed Adidas in an a cappella verse before shouting "Give us a million dollars!" The single reached number 5 on the Hot Black Singles chart. Questlove ranked it sixth on Rolling Stone's 2012 list of the 50 greatest hip-hop songs, and Bob Dylan played it on Theme Time Radio Hour in 2007. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame displays a pair of Adidas DMC wore for a Rolling Stone cover shoot.
