Spellbound was released by Polydor on 22 May 1981 as the first single from Juju, with Follow the Sun on the B-side, and it reached number 22 in the UK. The band had toured the UK in February 1981 to premiere new material written with McGeoch. A 12-inch extended version later appeared on the 2006 remaster of the album.
Mojo placed McGeoch at number 89 in its 2006 list of the 100 greatest guitarists for his work on the song. Johnny Marr told BBC Radio 2 in February 2008 that it was clever, with a good picky thing going on that was very un-rock and roll. Barney Hoskyns of NME called it a glorious electric storm.
Spellbound played over the end credits of the Stranger Things season four finale, The Piggyback, and Duran Duran covered it on their 2023 album Danse Macabre.
