Getz's second bossa nova album for Verve was recorded at the CBS 30th Street Studio on 27 and 28 August 1962, with Gary McFarland arranging and conducting. It has four songs by Brazilian composers and four McFarland originals. McFarland avoided the traditional big band of eight brass and five saxophones in favor of four woodwinds and a French horn alongside three trumpets and two trombones, with a four-piece rhythm section and two percussionists. Jim Hall, Hank Jones, Doc Severinsen and Bob Brookmeyer each take short solos.

The album reached number 13 on the Billboard Top LP chart and stayed for 23 weeks. In DownBeat in December 1962 Don DeMichael gave it five stars, writing that Getz sings a solo rather than just plays it and praising McFarland's writing. Fordham of the Guardian thought the big band sometimes sounded unsuited to the idiom's delicacy, though he praised the interplay between Getz and Brookmeyer.
