Jobim wrote it in 1960. The Portuguese title refers to Corcovado, the mountain in Rio de Janeiro, and Gene Lees wrote the English lyrics sung on Getz/Gilberto. It is one of the two tracks with Astrud Gilberto's vocal, after The Girl from Ipanema.
Tony Bennett made the first popular English cover in 1963, with new lyrics by Buddy Kaye. The song has since become a jazz standard. Miles Davis recorded it for Quiet Nights, Frank Sinatra and Jobim for their 1967 album, and Andy Williams took an English-language version to number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965.
