Ralph Burns and Woody Herman composed it, and it grew out of the fourth segment of Burns's concert piece Summer Sequence. Herman's Second Herd recorded it on 27 December 1947, with Getz taking a notable eight-bar solo among a tenor section that also held Zoot Sims and Herbie Steward. Getz had a hit with it in 1948.
In 1952 Herman asked Johnny Mercer for lyrics and re-recorded the song. Versions by Herman and by Jo Stafford both charted in the United States that year, and Stafford's reached number 25 on the Billboard singles chart. Getz returned to it on his 1960 album Stan Getz & Strings.
