Opening Can't Buy a Thrill, it was released as a single in October 1972 with Fire in the Hole on the B-side, after the earlier single Dallas was withdrawn. It was recorded in August 1972 at the Village Recorder. The single runs 4:14 against 5:56 on the album, with a shortened intro and outro and no organ solo. The song is in G minor at 125 beats per minute. The liner notes call it a traditional song, which is a fabrication. Robustelli notes that it is one of the simplest Steely Dan songs harmonically, with five chords in one key.
Fagen sang the lead and played electric piano and a Yamaha YC-30 organ, and he and Dias are credited with the solos. Dias played guitar and electric sitar, Baxter guitar, Becker bass, Hodder drums and Victor Feldman percussion. Palmer sang it on The Midnight Special in February 1973. It reached 6 on the Hot 100 and Canada and 7 on Cash Box. In the UK it charted at 39 in 1975. The Guardian ranked it fourth among the band's twenty best, praising its dispassionate lyrics and its electric sitar and cheap organ solos. In 1983 Club House's mashup of it with Billie Jean reached 11 in the UK.
