It was the first album Wonder released under his new Motown contract, which gave him full artistic control. He began using ARP and Moog synthesizers in May 1971 after meeting Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff, who were associate producers, engineers and Moog programmers here. Wonder produced it and played every instrument except the trombone on Love Having You Around, played by Art Baron, and the guitar on Superwoman, played by Howard Buzz Feiten. Syreeta sang background vocals on Sweet Little Girl.

It reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 and number six on the R&B chart. The singles were Superwoman in April 1972, which reached number 33, and Keep On Running in August 1972, which reached number 90. Vince Aletti found some of the effects gimmicky and self-indulgent, Robert Christgau praised some of the most musical synthesizer improvisations yet, and Penny Valentine of Sounds called it an album of explosive genius and unshackled self-expression. Rolling Stone placed it at number 350 on its 2020 list. Sweet Little Girl and Evil open and close the Atlanta episode Teddy Perkins.
