Wonder wrote and produced it about the birth of his daughter Aisha Morris, with the Harlem songwriter and studio owner Burnetta Bunny Jones credited as a collaborator. Aisha was born on 2 February 1975 to Yolanda Simmons. The song opens with a baby's first cry recorded during an actual childbirth, and later includes a recording of Wonder bathing Aisha as a toddler, with her mother Yolanda Simmons credited as bathing assistant, along with an extended chromatic harmonica solo. Wonder plays all the instruments except some keyboards by Greg Phillinganes, and Nathan Watts's guide bass was replaced by Wonder's keyboard bass.

It was never a US single, because Wonder refused to shorten it for 45 rpm. The radio version shortened the intro and the ending, and airplay still took it to number 23 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in January 1977. David Parton's cover reached number four in Britain in 1977 and spent nine weeks on the chart.

Live

Wonder performed it for Queen Elizabeth II at the Diamond Jubilee Concert on 4 June 2012, with the lyrics altered to refer to the Queen.
