Released as a single in 1973, the second from Talking Book after Superstition, it became Wonder's third number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and his first on the Easy Listening chart. It won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002, and Rolling Stone ranks it at number 183 on its list of the 500 greatest songs. Billboard called it a soft, haunting ballad.
The first two lines are sung not by Wonder but by Jim Gilstrap, and Lani Groves sings the next two. Gilstrap and Groves, with Gloria Barley, also sing backing vocals. Wonder sings lead and plays Fender Rhodes and drums, Scott Edwards plays bass and Daniel Ben Zebulon plays congas. The single version adds horns to the mix.
