The band hired Tony Hoffer because they felt the self-titled album lacked some of the urgency of their earlier records. Goffey said he helped them keep takes short and sweet. The title came from a telescope that Rob Coombes brought to the studio and from a stay in the south of France, where the band listened to French radio and watched Carl Sagan documentaries. Its working title was Get Lost. The album was first played at the Meltdown festival at London's Royal Festival Hall on 28 June 2002, in the edition curated by David Bowie.

It reached number nine in the UK. Singles were Never Done Nothing Like That Before, Grace, Seen the Light and Rush Hour Soul. Pitchfork's Joe Tangari called it "a 40-minute tour of 70s British rock" and wrote that it had less focus than the previous two albums. It went gold in the UK.
