Jonathan Demme filmed the tour over four nights, 13 to 16 December 1983, at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles. Gary Goetzman produced and Gary Kurfirst was executive producer. The budget of $1.2 million was raised by the band. The expanded line-up on stage included Bernie Worrell, guitarist Alex Weir, percussionist Steve Scales and singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt. In the film Psycho Killer opens the show with Byrne alone, and Crosseyed and Painless is the final song.
The film premiered on 24 April 1984 at the San Francisco International Film Festival and had its US release on 19 October 1984. It entered the National Film Registry in 2021. A24's 4K restoration, with the negative found in an MGM vault, premiered at the Toronto festival on 11 September 2023, where the four members reunited for a Q&A with Spike Lee, who called it the greatest concert film of all time. Harrison and Eric Thorngren remixed the audio in Dolby Atmos, and Rhino's remaster of 18 August 2023 was the first soundtrack to include the complete concert. A24 Music released the tribute album Everyone's Getting Involved on 17 May 2024.
