The album holds only Talking Heads studio recordings of songs from Byrne's film True Stories, in which the band also appeared. A cast recording was planned but not released at the time. Wild Wild Life was its most prominent hit, and its video won two MTV Video Music Awards in 1987, for Best Group Video and Best Video from a Film. A video for Love for Sale was made for use in the film. Radiohead named themselves after the track Radio Head.
A 2006 reissue added an extended Wild Wild Life, a Papa Legba with lead vocals by Pops Staples, and a Radio Head with vocals by Tito Larriva. Guests on the original record included the Bert Cross Choir on Puzzlin' Evidence, the St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School Choir on Hey Now, and Steve Jordan on accordion on Radio Head. Eric Thorngren engineered and mixed.
