Swift conceived the album as a sister record to Folklore. In September 2020 she, Antonoff and Dessner filmed Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions and kept writing, and after the song Evermore was written Dessner concluded they were working on a new album. She recorded many of her vocals in person at Long Pond Studio in the Hudson Valley, and in late 2020 recorded "five or six" songs at Scarlet Pimpernel Studios at Marcus Mumford's home in Devon. Aaron Dessner produced 14 tracks of the standard edition, Antonoff co-produced Gold Rush, and Bryce Dessner orchestrated from Biarritz, France. Jonathan Low mixed all 17 tracks at Long Pond. The team worked under passwords and data encryption to keep the album from leaking.

Several songs began elsewhere. Closure and Dorothea were written for Big Red Machine. Willow grew from an instrumental Dessner called Westerly, and Swift wrote the song in an hour. No Body, No Crime is the only track she wrote without collaborators, and Haim recorded their vocals at Ariel Rechtshaid's home in Los Angeles. Coney Island started as a track Aaron and Bryce Dessner wrote for the National, and Matt Berninger sings the duet. Marjorie samples the drone from Folklore's Peace and soprano vocals by the opera singer Marjorie Finlay. Happiness was finished six days before mastering.

It reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart dated December 26, 2020, with all 15 tracks entering the Hot 100 at once. A week of 102,000 vinyl sales in June 2021 was the highest single-week vinyl figure since MRC Data began tracking in 1991. The album is certified four-times platinum in the United States and Metacritic gives it 85. The Guardian's Petridis wrote that it continues the job Folklore started, and Pitchfork's Sam Sodomsky called Justin Vernon the most natural and inventive vocal accompanist Swift had found. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2022 Grammys.
