Congoman is the second track on Heart of the Congos, written by Myton, Johnson and Perry. Winston Wright, credited on the album for organ, plays bass on it. Island issued only this song from the album, as a 12-inch single of Congo Man on its Black Swan imprint in 1977, produced by Perry and written by Myton and Johnson. Congo Man runs 6:16 on the A side, and the B side is Congo Man Chant at 6:15.
Both sides were carried over to the second disc of Blood and Fire's 1996 reissue, as the Congoman 12-inch mix and Congoman Chant, and the 2017 anniversary set lists Congoman Chant again beside a 12-inch mix. When Pitchfork ranked the album 46th among the albums of the 1970s, Congoman was the track it told readers to hear. In 2003 a set of Carl Craig edits of Congo Man was released. In the film Wah Do Dem, the Congos appear on screen and perform Congoman Chant.
