Wish reached number one in Britain and number two in the United States, and was nominated for a Grammy. It is the most commercially successful album of the band's career. Friday I'm in Love was its second single.

It was the last studio album with Boris Williams, the first with Perry Bamonte and the last with Porl Thompson for sixteen years. After demos in early 1991, the sessions began in September 1991 and lasted about six months. Thompson said it was recorded on 48 tracks and almost everything was used. Smith said that detuned guitars played a role in the sound, and that he had listened to Chapterhouse's Mesmerise and the Human League's Human while making it. All the songs are credited to the band as a whole. Kate Wilkinson played viola on To Wish Impossible Things.

The singles were High on 16 March 1992, which reached number eight in Britain and topped the Modern Rock chart, Friday I'm in Love on 15 May, and A Letter to Elise on 5 October, which reached number 28 in Britain. Rolling Stone gave the album four stars. A remastered 30th anniversary edition followed on 25 November 2022, mastered at Abbey Road by Smith and Miles Showell.
