The album brought guitarist Ronald Jones and drummer Steven Drozd into the line-up, after Jonathan Donahue and Nathan Roberts departed. Keith Cleversley engineered and mixed it. She Don't Use Jelly became the band's first charting radio hit after its video was shown on Beavis and Butt-head nearly a year after the album came out, and Turn It On was a second single in April 1995. Trouser Press called the first single grade-A whimsy among post-punk novelty singles. The album peaked at 108 on the Billboard 200 in 1995 and had sold 300,000 copies worldwide by 2002. Plastic Jesus, written by Ed Rush and George Cromarty, is printed as seven stars on all of the packaging.
