The first single was released in November 1984 by Creation Records, backed by a cover of Syd Barrett's Vegetable Man. It began as a demo made on the Portastudio the brothers bought in 1983. It reached 37 in John Peel's Festive Fifty for 1984, topped the UK Indie Chart in February 1985, and stayed on that chart for 76 weeks. Bobby Gillespie printed the sleeves of the first 1,000 copies in Glasgow. Spin wrote that the sound of feedback in it is an instrument in itself.
