State of Confusion was the band's twentieth studio album. It was recorded between September 1982 and March 1983 at Konk Studios in London and produced by Ray Davies. Ray recalled the period as difficult and said the cover shows everybody going in different directions. It was the last Kinks album on which Mick Avory appeared as a full member.
It reached number 12 on Billboard and was certified gold in Canada by August 1983. Rolling Stone said no band deserved more to be at the very top. The cassette edition carried two extra tracks, "Long Distance" and "Noise".
