The band recorded it in three days in December 2015 at British Grove Studios in London. It is their first album made up entirely of cover songs, drawn from artists such as Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter, and the title comes from Little Walter's Blue and Lonesome. It followed A Bigger Bang by eleven years, the longest gap between two of their albums. Don Was produced with the Glimmer Twins. Eric Clapton, who was recording his own album in the same studio, played on two tracks. Jagger sang and played harmonica without playing guitar, and Richards sang no lead.
Just Your Fool was the lead single on 6 October 2016. The album reached number one in the UK, selling 106,000 in its first week, and number four on the Billboard 200. It won the Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album at the 60th Grammy Awards in January 2018, the band's first Grammy win since 1995. Alexis Petridis of the Guardian wrote that the Stones sound more alive than they had for years, and Kitty Empire of the Observer called it a labour of love. Christgau was less impressed and called it a sodden thing.
