Most of the album comes from four BBC Radio 1 sessions in 1983, two for John Peel (18 May and 14 September) and two for David Jensen (26 June and 25 August). To these it adds Hand in Glove, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now and William, It Was Really Nothing, and their B-sides. The session version of This Charming Man lacks the guitar intro of the single, and Still Ill opens and closes with a harmonica played by Marr. The cover was photographed by Gilles Decroix and shows the model Fabrice Colette.
It reached number seven in Britain and stayed on the chart for 46 weeks. Douglas Wolk of Pitchfork called it a masterpiece and a snapshot of a band moving too quickly to get a bead on. Q placed it at 44 on its 2000 list of the 100 greatest British albums. Sire declined to release it in the United States, so it appeared there only in 1993.
