Shows on the Tommy tour had been recorded, but the band disliked the sound. They booked Leeds, plus Hull City Hall the next day, and the Hull tapes had technical problems. Townshend considered a double album and settled on six tracks. There was no audience microphone. The sleeve imitates a bootleg, parodying the Rolling Stones' Live'r Than You'll Ever Be.
The 1995 25th Anniversary Edition runs 76:57 and adds eight tracks, including Heaven and Hell, Happy Jack and A Quick One While He's Away. The 2001 Deluxe Edition adds a second disc of 20 Tommy tracks. A 2014 download-only remaster restored the original running order.
The album reached number three in Britain and number four in the United States. Nik Cohn called it the best live rock album ever made in the New York Times, and Rolling Stone readers voted it the best live album of all time in 2012. In 2006 Daltrey and Townshend unveiled a blue plaque at the Refectory.
