Townshend wrote it for Lifehouse as the theme of the villain Jumbo. It is said to have been written after a June 1970 concert in Denver. The Who's Next version was recorded at Olympic in May and June 1971 with Daltrey, Townshend on acoustic and electric guitar and backing vocals, Entwistle and Moon. An earlier March 1971 take from the Record Plant, with Al Kooper on Hammond organ, was released on the 1995 CD reissue.
It was the second single from the album, in October 1971, and reached number 34 on the US Hot 100. It has been played about 912 times live.
