John Kruth ties the title to the night in 1972 when Townes overdosed and was revived; Kevin Eggers said it was a publicity stunt in the spirit of the Paul is dead rumors. Milton Glaser designed a funeral-card cover. Townes vetoed Eggers's idea of adding drums to Pancho and Lefty. The album also has his father's favorite country song, Fraulein, and Hank Williams's Honky Tonkin'. AllMusic calls it near-perfect.
