All That You Can't Leave Behind

The music is credited to U2 and the lyrics to Bono. It grew out of the Hanover Quay sessions in winter 1999, from an earlier song, Always, which became a B-side. US rock radio received it on 19 September 2000. Bono said it is about a man who has lost everything but finds joy in what he has left.

It reached number one in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and Canada and 21 in the United States. At the 2001 Grammys it won Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Jonas Akerlund directed the video at Charles de Gaulle airport in August 2000.

Live and covers

It was first played in March 2001 on the Elevation Tour, then at Super Bowl XXXVI and Live 8 in 2005, and it closed the Sphere residency. Lee DeWyze covered it in 2010, reaching 24 on the Hot 100.
