Three weeks of demos in late 1998 at Hanover Quay Studios produced Kite among other songs. Sessions then ran past a 1999 target, held up by schedules, Bono's work for Jubilee 2000 and the soundtrack to The Million Dollar Hotel. Lanois and Eno produced, with additional production and mixing from Steve Lillywhite, Mike Hedges, Richard Stannard and Julian Gallagher, Tim Palmer and Steve Fitzmaurice. The music is credited to U2 and the lyrics to Bono, with the Edge also credited on three songs.

Eno played synthesizer and did programming, Lanois sang backing vocals and added guitar, and Paul Barrett played brass. The international edition adds The Ground Beneath Her Feet, with words by Salman Rushdie.
