Morrison said he wrote it with the Monarchs in Germany in the summer of 1963. He introduced it at the Maritime Hotel in Belfast, adding lyrics as he played, and it sometimes stretched to fifteen or twenty minutes. Them recorded it on 5 April 1964 at Decca Three Studios in West Hampstead, one of seven songs cut that day. Decca's Dick Rowe brought in session players Arthur Greenslade on organ and Bobby Graham on drums, and bassist Alan Henderson has said Them were the first rock group to use two drummers on a record.

It came out in the UK on 6 November 1964 as the B-side of Baby, Please Don't Go, and only the A-side charted there. In the US it was a regional hit on the West Coast, reaching number one on Los Angeles station KRLA for three weeks in April 1965, and entered the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966, peaking at 71. It was added to Them's first UK album, The Angry Young Them. It received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.

The Shadows of Knight took it to number 10 on the Hot 100 in 1966, and Patti Smith opened her 1975 debut album Horses with her own version, built on a poem of hers. The Doors performed it between 1966 and 1970. Morrison himself recorded it again with John Lee Hooker in 1993, and a live version is on side four of It's Too Late to Stop Now. On the final night of Them's Whisky a Go Go residency in June 1966, the two Morrisons and their bands jammed on it together. It appears in 1,063 of the 2,253 logged setlists that list songs.
