Morrison recorded it at A & R Studios in New York during the session that began on 28 March 1967, and it was captured on the 22nd take of the first day. The musicians were guitarists Al Gorgoni and Hugh McCracken, bassist Russ Savakus, organist Garry Sherman and drummer Gary Chester, with the Sweet Inspirations singing backing vocals. Released on Bang in mid-June 1967, it reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for sixteen weeks.

It was originally titled Brown-Skinned Girl, and Morrison called the change of title a mistake, describing the song as a kind of Jamaican calypso. A radio edit replaced the line about making love in the green grass. The first verse mentions the Hollow, a park and waterway in Bloomfield, East Belfast, about 200 metres from where he grew up on Hyndford Street.

Because of the contract he signed with Bang, Morrison says he has never received royalties for it. He has said it is not one of his best and that he has about 300 songs he thinks are better. As of 2015 it was the most downloaded and most played song of the 1960s, and it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in January 2007. A live version recorded on the 1973 tour was added to the 2008 remaster of It's Too Late to Stop Now, and the song appears in 848 of the 2,253 logged setlists that list songs.
