Can't Stand It

Can't Stand It opens Summerteeth. Reprise wanted a hit single from the album, and Wilco agreed to meet the request once and only once, because they wanted to cooperate with a label that had given them so much freedom. The band and label agreed to remix the song with David Kahne. Within a day it had been cut down, with portions of the bridge removed and bells added, and that is the version on the album.

The song failed to cross over from adult album alternative to modern rock radio. At the November 1999 Boulder concert on the 2020 deluxe edition, Pitchfork noted that Tweedy rewrote a line of the lyric.
