Grass is sometimes taken to be about cannabis, but Moulding wrote it about youthful experiences at Coate Water Country Park in Swindon. He composed it on a guitar in open E tuning and found its chord changes by playing the shapes of Thunderclap Newman's Something in the Air. Blending violin and guitar was an idea borrowed from John Lennon's How Do You Sleep? Rundgren added a tiple to the mix.

Moulding first sang it lower, and his voice was raised an octave for the final recording. The track bookends Summer's Cauldron, which it follows without a break, with a reprise of that song's insect chorus. It was the UK lead single in August 1986, backed with Dear God, and reached number 100. Nick Brandt directed the promotional video.
