Partridge based the song on Manfred Mann's 5-4-3-2-1 and wrote it as a conscious attempt at a commercial single. He did not think it good enough to be a single, and was surprised when Virgin chose it. Moulding recalled that it sounded like something Genesis or Queen would have done, bands that had been openly mocked two years earlier.
It reached number 10 in the UK, and the album behind it reached number 5. At the director's suggestion, the video was filmed at double speed and slowed down so the musicians looked more graceful. It was shot at Shepperton Studios while the band rehearsed for the English Settlement tour. The B-sides were Moulding's Blame the Weather and Partridge's Tissue Tigers (The Arguers). Spacehog covered the song in 1995 for the tribute album A Testimonial Dinner.
