Trevor Rabin wrote the song in 1979 and said he wrote the whole thing from beginning to end. He recorded demos on a four-track, and they were released in 2003 on his compilation 90124. Clive Davis at Arista turned him down, while Ron Fair of RCA called it a game changer. Rabin did not at first think it right for the group, but in January 1983, with an extra song needed for the Cinema album, Trevor Horn heard the demo while Rabin was out of the room. He disliked the verses but recognised the introduction and chorus as a hit single.
Horn took about seven months to persuade Rabin to rewrite the lyrics, and his own verse, beginning "Move yourself, you always live your life", earned him 15 per cent of the credit. Rabin said Horn's share thanked him for introducing the Synclavier. Horn insisted on a drum machine sequence programmed with Squire, and White objected at first. Horn also used a five-second drum break from Funk, Inc.'s "Kool Is Back" as a sample, which White played on a Fairlight. Questlove has called it the first use of a sample as a breakbeat. Anderson joined in April 1983, which turned Cinema into Yes, and rewrote the second verse. Horn and the engineer Gary Langan answered by adding a gunshot after the line about the eagle in the sky.
The single came out on 24 October 1983. It is the only Yes single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and finished 1984 at number eight on the US year-end chart. Storm Thorgerson directed the video, shot in London, and MTV showed it often. Max Graham's 2005 version reached number nine in the UK, and Art of Noise sampled the song in "Close (to the Edit)". Andy Cush of Pitchfork called it one of the craziest-sounding records ever made.
