The band recorded and produced it at Strawberry in 1974, with Stewart engineering and mixing. It was the first album on Mercury, who signed the band for US$1 million in February 1975 after hearing I'm Not in Love. The artwork was designed by Hipgnosis and illustrated by Humphrey Ocean. It opens with Une Nuit a Paris, a three-part piece the Guardian describes as a nine-minute mini-opera, and Godley recalled that one magazine had called it an overreach. The singles were Life Is a Minestrone, which reached number seven in the UK, and I'm Not in Love.

It reached number three in the UK and number 15 in the US. Rolling Stone's Ken Barnes wrote that there was more going on musically than in ten Yes albums. Robert Christgau of the Village Voice panned it. A Guardian writer in 2012 called it every bit as cinematic as its title suggests.
