The album was the band's third with cover artwork by Hipgnosis and produced the UK hits I'm Mandy, Fly Me and Art for Art's Sake. It was the last by the original line-up until ...Meanwhile in 1992. Gouldman told Melody Maker at its release that it was as different as any album by the same band could be, and described its songs as a strange mixture: one about divorce, one about schizophrenia, one about wanting to rule the world, the inevitable money song and an instrumental. Robert Christgau wrote that the band did not know whether they were supposed to be funny or pretty. Mair Jones played harp on the closing track.
