Changes was recorded in 1992 during his time at Interscope and produced by Big D The Impossible, Deon Evans. It was remixed in 1998 by Poke of Trackmasters and released as a single from Greatest Hits on 13 October 1998, with the trio Talent on the chorus. It borrows from Bruce Hornsby and the Range's The Way It Is (1986) and the drum loop of Strafe's Set It Off (1984), and it reuses lines from I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto.
The lyrics take in racism, police brutality, drugs and gang violence. The Huey in the line about two shots in the dark is Huey P. Newton, and another line imagines a black president. It reached number one in Norway and the Netherlands and number three in the United Kingdom. It was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 2000 Grammys. Chuck Taylor of Billboard called it an unquestionable smash. E-40's Things'll Never Change interprets it, Nas sampled it on Black President, and Polo G interpolated it on Wishing for a Hero in 2020.
