California Love came out on 3 December 1995 as his comeback single and his first for Death Row, with Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman. The earliest version was Dr. Dre's, with three verses of his own and Troutman's talk box chorus. Suge Knight heard it and pushed for Tupac to take over as the rapper. Tupac needed 15 minutes to write his verse, and the song was written and made in Dr. Dre's in-house studio. The original is on the UK edition of All Eyez on Me, and a remix is on the standard album.
The hook comes from EPMD's Knick Knack Patty Wack, and the chorus line about California partying comes from Ronnie Hudson and the Street People's West Coast Poplock, sung by Troutman. The remix samples Kleeer's Intimate Connection. The song reached number one on the Hot 100 as a double A-side with How Do U Want It, topped the charts in Italy, New Zealand and Sweden, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
Jada Pinkett Smith came up with the video concept, inspired by Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and Hype Williams directed it. It was filmed from 10 to 13 November 1995 in El Mirage, California, and is set in a desert in the year 2095. It won the 1996 MOBO Award for Best Video.
