Banbarra's original was a 1975 two-part single on United Artists, written by Moe Daniels and Joe "Bunny" Carter and recorded at Track Recorders in Washington, DC; Carter wrote the lyrics, and Daniels wrote the instrumental, first titled "Boogie on the Other Side of Town". It was a club hit in the UK and Los Angeles, and no royalties were paid. A Dundee group, Rokotto, covered it in 1978, and one source says ACR based their version on Rokotto's, while Electronic Sound says Simon Topping brought a 45 of the original bought for 50 pence at Yanks, a Manchester shop selling deleted US imports.
It was the band's first cover. The core is a two-note riff, Moscrop and Topping played trumpet, Johnson knew the drum pattern, and Kerr played sheep jaw bones and claves on the break. It was recorded at the Graveyard Studio, the basement of Stewart Pickering's house on Church Road in Prestwich, named for the graveyard next door, on four tracks with the basics live to two, in about a day for 50 pounds. Moscrop said they were trying to copy it, and that the production consisted of making sure everyone got to the studio and someone pressed record. It was their first production without Hannett.
Released in July 1980 as their second single through Factory Benelux, it was a Belgium-only release by the discography page. In the United States a 1981 single coupled "Do the Du (Casse)" and "Shack Up", reaching number 46 on Billboard's dance club songs. Dan Carey, who produced It All Comes Down to This, says he first met the band's work from a poster for a Norman Cook remix of it at Piccadilly Records. It features in the film Intimacy (2001). Electronic Sound says it influenced Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses.
Setlist.fm lists it as ACR's most-played song, 131 times in 396 setlists; they played it on August 5, 2005 at The Big Chill at Eastnor Castle. Samples of the Banbarra original, not of ACR's, turn up in Public Enemy, N.W.A, Happy Mondays, Coldcut, 3rd Bass, Stetsasonic and Gang Starr. We hold two uploads of this title, and nothing found distinguishes them.
