Song for Sathima

The second track on Water From An Ancient Well, written by Ibrahim. Sathima Bea Benjamin, the South African singer and composer who married Ibrahim in 1965, is credited as the album's producer. It was Benjamin who persuaded Duke Ellington to hear Ibrahim's trio in Zurich. Scott Yanow of AllMusic named it among the album's finest compositions.

Ibrahim recorded it again for The Balance (2019), where DownBeat described it as a wailing eulogy, with the alto saxophonist and flutist Cleave Guyton Jr. taking the lead after Ibrahim introduces it and drops out. Benjamin died on 20 August 2013, aged 76.
